Throngs marching in the streets near Nicholas P. Vitukevich’s apartment last year gave him a firsthand look at the political protests that erupted in Athens, Greece, occasionally closing nearby streets and grinding the city’s transportation system to a halt.

“The economy is so bad over there and this is what they have to do,” said the Franklin Pierce University senior. “The whole city shuts down when there’s going to be a protest.”
