Dear reader, Happy New Year and welcome back! We begin the new decade by bringing you to the historic and culturally-rich country of England, one of the most popular study abroad destinations in the world. With virtually no limit to the courses available, there are programs to suit students of all levels and fields of study. Its varied and diverse countryside offers up dramatic coastlines and rolling hills dotted with ruins and castles, quaint villages with cozy pubs, and bustling cities and towns that boast vibrant cultural scenes. Our featured City of the Month is England's political, cultural and business center, the capital city of London. With over 300 different spoken languages, London is one of the world's most multicultural cities where thousands of students from all corners of the world study and intern each year. Home to numerous famous landmarks, such as the Tower of London and Big Ben, a vast array of museums in the arts and sciences, and the West End with its world-class theater, London is one of the most loved cities in the world. Vibrant multicultural cities and towns, quaint villages, rolling countryside and dramatic coastline result in a varied and diverse country. Students of all levels, backgrounds and fields of study are sure to find a study abroad program that meets their needs. There is virtually no limit to the courses available to study abroad students. A simple search on IIEPassport.org for "England" and "full curriculum" will return results including programs of every duration and time of year. Specialized options include independent study, study tour, adult education, practical training and internships. With this abundance of opportunities, students can and should be discerning in their choice of program. Perhaps it has something to do with the coziness of the pubs and the amiable Londoners themselves. It's most likely, though, that London's allure is some combination of all and none of these-an ineffable mix that makes London one of the most famous and beloved cities in the world, no matter how gray and heavy the skies hang or how frequently the rains roll in from the North Atlantic. London has captured the imagination of the world since the Romans set up camp there around 43 C.E. After their fall, various Celtic tribes, as well as the Angles and the Saxons, moved in and made the city their own. The English language as we know it today is the result of both the Germanic tongue of these Anglo-Saxons and French used after the Norman invasions of 1066.
