Historic Perugia sits atop a hill near the Tiber River, in Italy's central Umbria region. Nicknamed the "University City," Perugia plays host to major universities, smaller colleges, a fine arts academy, a classical music conservatory, and numerous other arts colleges. International students studying abroad in Perugia find themselves captivated by this historic, lively city, surrounded by fascinating architecture, language, music and art.
For international students who wish to immerse themselves in the Italian language, Perugia's Universita per Stranieri (University for Foreigners) is one of two national universities designed to instruct foreign students in Italian language and culture. Students take part in a comprehensive curriculum at this prestigious institution, which began in 1921 with the aim of educating the public about the region of Umbria. Courses in the Italian language and culture are available at all levels and in specialized areas, and students can choose housing that pairs them with either fellow international students or native Italians.
Perugia is also home to the Umbra Institute, an accredited institution designed for international students studying abroad. Located in the 15th century Palazzo degli Oddi, a palace still owned by direct descendants of the Italian nobility that built it, the facilities are decorated with fine paintings and frescoed ceilings, and include a computer lab and other modern amenities. Umbra students have the opportunity to study Italian at Universita per Stranieri while taking English-taught courses in subjects such as art, history, politics, music, dance, classical studies, philosophy and culture. An independent research component under the guidance of a faculty mentor is also available. U.S. students can apply for these programs through Arcadia University, Center for Education Abroad.
A leading institute for scientific research, the historic University of Perugia (Universita degli Studi di Perugia) is a public university founded in 1308. Steeped in a proud history, with alumni that include popes and princes, the university boasts a state-of-the-art language center, twelve libraries for specialized studies, and a rare book collection of more than 10,000 volumes representing the period from the 15th to 18th centuries.
From antipasto to tiramisu, the cuisine of Umbria is world-renowned. Recipes are based on family traditions that date back to the Etruscans, and great pride is taken in preparing dishes made with local produce and great care and attention. For the serious student of the culinary arts, the Alta Societa School offers Italian cooking courses in Italian, with English translation available. Perugia is also famous for its chocolate, particularly the baci (kisses) made in Perguia and sold throughout the world. Thousands of people converge on the city each October to indulge in Eurochocolate, an international festival which draws connoisseurs from near and far.
For students of history, architectural history and art history, Perugia is a delight. The city still contains original walls and arches that date back to the Etruscans, who lived in the city from the 6th to the 3rd century BC. Medieval and Renaissance churches, palaces, fortresses, monuments and fountains abound. Started in 1394 and completed 64 years later, the Basilica di San Domenico holds many precious items, including the tomb of Pope Benedict XI (1303-04). The Palazzo dei Priori (Town Hall) is considered one of the most renowned civic buildings in all of Italy. Built by the Italian communes that thrived in Central Italy during the medieval period, it boasts an exquisite 14th century wooden interior with many famous frescoes.
Perugia is also home to important museums, including the Museo Archeologico. Housed in a former Dominican convent, it has an astounding collection of artifacts dating back to the Paleolithic period. In addition to the museums, students will also want to tour Perugia's Medieval Botanical Garden.
Students are not only drawn to Perugia to study the rich Italian language and history. Music, dance and celebrations are an important part of the Italian lifestyle; students who love music will want to be in town for the Umbria Jazz Festival, considered a major jazz event since it was founded in 1973.
With an abundance of historic landmarks, art and architecture, fabulous cuisine, and warm and welcoming people, Perugia is an ideal study abroad destination.
